I - Cultural policies for an alliance between heritage
and creation
I - Cultural policies for an alliance between heritage and creation
Policy of animation of the historical monuments in France
An old tradition
Action of the French Government has been initiated by the creation
of theMinistry of Culture
Preservation of the historic monuments starts with the materialisation
of the policy on the patrimonial national heritage protection
Historical monuments
civil “patrimoine”
International and European regulations
International and European assistance regarding cultural heritage
.
The Europeans institutions
European days of the heritage are the occasion to rediscover the
richness of the French and European heritage.
I I - Redefinition of national heritage
A new definition / a new valorisation
A new definition of the national heritage:
is linked to the spirit, the mood and the actuality of the country
is a question of re-using it
is the focus on current problems (Cultural, urban, economic, social,
touristic, aesthetics)
Redefinition of the religious heritage arises at the present time
because of the effects of:
- impact of the dechristianization and sell of national goods during
the French Revolution
- cost of the maintenance and restoration
How to reconsider the use of these buildings?
How to reassign of these monuments?
The religious patrimony
The case is particular. Music and singing used to take place there:
- Choral activities (parishioners, chorus of monks or laics);
- Musicians during the religious celebrations.
III - Typology of Notre Dame de Reigny Abbey
Notre Dame de Reigny,
Located in Burgundy, Is a very rich testimony of a cultural past
from an architectural point of view.
Monks spent their time working and praying.
The “chauffoir” was turned during the 18th century into:
A fashion staircase
a bakery
a 14 th century huge dining room with a chair of lector
The “scriptorium” turned into:
A dining room,
a living room,
a kitchen ;
Reigny has been “protected” since 1921
IV- Live performances at the festival

Settle the framework of a cultural event
allows, the public and the patrons, to take part in the restoration
of the abbey.
IV- Live performances at the festival
Idea to relive the space of the refectory, by a serie of events
matching the verb and the music
To show the vitality and the modernity of the French language
To enable the audience to see and hear performances of a great sobriety
in natural acoustics (without microphones.)
IV- Live performances at the festival
combine the quality and the originality of the performance with
the architecture and its role herited from Cistercian history

To conclude:
A brand new redefinition should balance:
collaboration and protection of the monument versus experimentation
national impact versus expectations (cultural, economical &
social policies)
tourism versus cultural objectives
The social and territorial challenges generated by such projects
:
- develop a realistic project, related to the territory in and its
population;
think the project as an entity;
define precisely what we want to do without taking short cuts
Not rely only on summer events (orientated towards a tourist public)
Not to neglect the local population, the rest of the year in turning
monuments into a mere touristic attraction
Each project have its own organic growth duration
The most important aspects to optimize a project are :
to be opened to the outside world,
to develop networks with other cultural and patrimonial structures;
to put together various abilities and to acquire a new visibility
A new successful definition is characterized by:
a modernized conception of the monument adapted to present time
and to its environment;
a way to recover its importance (intellectual, political, social,
or artistic)
Thank you for your attention
I hope to see you soon in Reigny
